Turkmenistan Carpet

These carpets are woven by the Turkman tribes.

The main center of producing these carpets is in Golestan province in north of Iran and south of Caspian Sea.

Examples of these rugs have been found 300 years ago.

Turkmen people in Iran lived in tents.

Carpet weaving is done by women.

There are 25,000 weavers in Golestan province and about 20,000 meters of hand-woven carpets are produced annually. Most of these carpets are exported and their main buyers are Japan, America, Canada and Germany

These carpets are woven with goat and sheep wool and have short lint and hair.

Their colors are herbal.

Shapes on carpets are usually geometric shapes and are inspired by nature, plants and animals, but because they do not like the image of animals on the carpet, the animal-like and flower like shapes are used in Turkmen carpets.

They call similar roles and geometric shapes in the Turkmen carpet (Gaul) and the role of small animals and flowers among the Gauls (Eragul).
